Hi everypony. I use an hour to make a little break and write something about our favorite Unicorn - Twilight Sparkle.
We are used to know Twilight as the personal student of Princess Celestia and a kinda leader of the Mane 6. She is the Element of Magic and like books. That's all.
But some days ago, we got the official Season-3-End-Spoiler, that Twi' goes Princess Mode - maybe FOREVER! And since this announcement the fandom is raging like a barbarian or a LoL-Player. I want to talk about this and tell you an idea, why everypony is so angry.
I think there are 2 reasons.
The first reason is nopony likes changes. Think back when Youtube changed the Layout. The most of my friends told me, they hate the new design and want the old back. The same happened on 4players.de. Since I'm visit the site 4players changed the layout 2 times. The result were ~1000+ posts that the people want back the old design.
BUT - Some weeks later nopony cares anymore and everypony is fine with the change.
The problem is, that Twilight doesn't get a new outfit. She gets a complete new role inside the Ponyverse. So the "Change"-Problem is the smaller one.
I think the problem is a dramatic problem. We aren't prepared for this. We can sing our own Failure Song about it. We got no defined preparations, that Twi goes Princess Mode. The onliest thing we got in season 3 were the words of Celestia, 'that Twilight will be much closer to being ready'. This isn't enough to make Twilight to a "chosen one"-like character of epicness of doom.
I like to compare it with Matrix. In Matrix we know, Morpheus will find the Chosen One and Trinity will love the Chosen One. These are defined preparations. As watcher we just get the idea, that Neo as main figure will be the hero. Beside of this we can interpret Neo's name as something special. When the film continues and we see Neo is the chosen one, we can deal with it, 'cause we have ideas, interpretations and definitions.
In case of Twilight we just get a clue, that something important is going on. Maybe she is ready for a special adventure, some new studies or maybe, maybe, maybe she goes princess.
Some of you like to say that Twilight has es special name or color. She is quite imba as we saw in the Cutiemark Chronicles. She is the leader of the mane 6 and got a Princess as foal sitter. These are just clues, that Twilight is important. We can only interpret this clues as signs, that Twi could become a princess.
We are accustomed to get well prepared clues and signs for the end of a movie. It has a reason, that Neytiri told Jack Sulley of Toruk Makto in Avatar. It has a reason that the little girl in Signs doesn't drink the water and it has a reason, that Cadence can cast a love spell. But in case of Twilight-Princess we didn't get any clues like this. As grown up fans we have a kinda demand of good story telling.
I like to say, that the episodes for themselves have a good story telling and sometimes I find the usage of story telling rules. We have good writer for the show. In my opinion – it is just a mistake to make Twilight to an Instant-Princess. For us as grown up fan,s it could be better, if we get a clue that Twilight is going to be a princess. In the end of Season 4 or the beginning of season 5 she can become a princess and we can deal with it. We would have time to speculate, to write fimfictions and discuss the development of Twilight. But now – the most of us got a purple colored sucker punch, quite similar to the sudden appearance of Cadence.
The best thing we could do is to watch the episode and see if the digivolution of Twilight works fine and matches into the Pony-Lore. I was skeptic about Cadence first, but after the two episodes she fits quite good into the Ponyverse.
